Live on camera, from home, whenever you want. Here’s what cam platforms pay you, how they verify you, how to protect yourself and how we connect you with our network.

What does a webcam model do?

You broadcast live on a cam platform, and your viewers pay you in tokens or credits, the platform’s currency. For every token, the platform pays you a fixed amount or a share. When you go live and what you show is your call, within the platform’s rules.

Which cam sites are there?

For this guide, we took a close look at eight: Stripchat, Chaturbate, LiveJasmin, BongaCams, CAM4, MyFreeCams, Streamate and Flirt4Free. They differ in what a token is worth, how often they pay out, how precisely you can block countries and whether they accept couples.

How much is a token worth?

On Stripchat, Chaturbate and MyFreeCams, you get $0.05 per token, and on CAM4 it’s $0.10. Others work with a share:

• On LiveJasmin, your share rises with your earnings in the pay period, from 30% up to 80%, and starts at 30% again in every new period. Some features have a fixed share.
• BongaCams advertises a share of over 50% of your earnings.
• Streamate and Flirt4Free pay a percentage but don’t say how high it is on their pages for models.

What you end up with depends on how often you go live, how you engage with your viewers and how many regulars you win over. There’s no reliable figure for that, and anyone who promises you one is dressing up the numbers.

How do the platforms check my age?

With a government-issued photo ID and a photo of you, often a selfie holding your ID. The minimum age is 18, and 21 in some countries on LiveJasmin and BongaCams.

Anyone who appears on camera with you has to be verified too. Stripchat, Chaturbate, BongaCams, LiveJasmin and Flirt4Free explicitly require this, and BongaCams threatens to suspend the account otherwise.

Can I block my own country?

Yes, all eight platforms let you block viewers by location, but with varying precision:

• Stripchat blocks countries and, in most countries, individual regions too.
• BongaCams blocks countries, regions and individual cities.
• CAM4 blocks entire countries or individual regions within them.
• In Germany, Spain and the Czech Republic, Chaturbate only blocks the whole country. It only offers individual regions in the US, Canada and the United Kingdom.
• LiveJasmin blocks all visitors in your home country, but only guests in up to three other countries. Logged-in members can still see you there.
• Flirt4Free itself says that its blocking doesn’t work for visits from mobile phones.

No block is watertight. Stripchat itself says it can’t reliably keep out viewers who use a VPN. Even so, blocking helps keep the people next door and your colleagues from stumbling across you. What else you can do is covered in our guide to staying anonymous.

When and how do I get paid?

Depending on the platform, weekly, every two weeks or twice a month, to a European bank account by SEPA transfer, and also via e-wallets and crypto. Three examples:

• Stripchat pays out every Tuesday, by SEPA from $100 and with no fee.
• Chaturbate’s pay periods run from the 1st to the 15th and from the 16th to the end of the month. It pays by SEPA from $50, and the fee is $8.95.
• LiveJasmin works in 14-day periods and pays out 25 days after a period ends, by SEPA only from $300.

Can we cam as a couple?

Yes, on seven of the eight platforms. On Stripchat, that works through a group account with 2 to 6 verified people, and on LiveJasmin you need a studio account for it. Only MyFreeCams has no couples format: other models may only join you on camera occasionally there, and men may never be in a female model’s room.

Are there separate sections for trans models?

Yes. Stripchat, Chaturbate, BongaCams, LiveJasmin, CAM4 and Flirt4Free have their own trans sections. On Stripchat, you land there automatically if you state trans as your gender during verification.

On your own or through a studio?

On your own, your contract is directly with the platform, and it pays you. Through a studio, your money runs through the studio:

• On Chaturbate, studio models’ tokens go to the studio automatically every night, and you can’t have them paid out to yourself.
• On LiveJasmin, all earnings of a studio’s models go to the studio owner.
• On BongaCams, studio models have no contract with the platform, and the studio alone sets their terms.
• On Stripchat, the studio pays its models itself, and you’re not allowed to have an active account of your own and one with a studio at the same time.

A studio is worth it if it offers you something you don’t have on your own, such as a place to work, equipment or support. Before you start, get in writing what share it keeps and when it pays you.

Do I have to pay tax on my earnings?

Yes, income from webcam shows is taxable. Exactly what applies to you depends on your country and the scale of your work, so it’s best to sort that out with a tax professional.
